John was a career naval officer (1991-2011) with specialty in submarining and nuclear engineering. Submarines are a small self-contained world requiring close and continual attention to atmosphere, energy, resource, and waste management. He first encountered the term sustainability while studying civil engineering (environmental) at the University of New Mexico in 2006. John further pursued sustainability at Dalhousie University (MES, 2016) where he designed the Energyshed Framework and published it as his thesis. John enjoyed teaching sustainability with the Dalhousie College of Sustainability and participated in the launch of the Sustainability Leadership Certificate program.
After his time at Dalhousie University John worked with the private sector with Unisys Corporation on the Advanced Data Analytics team and then moved to SAIC as an Enterprise Solutions Architect specializing in data system designs supporting Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications serving multiple US Federal agencies during his tenure (2017-2022).
John currently lives on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada and manages a tract of land where he is designing sustainable methods for capacity building and resiliency. He is happily married and has three adult children.
